From theory to real-world AI systems

The AI Developer workshop strengthens pupils’ understanding of how computer science theory is applied in modern AI systems. Students explore how programming constructs, data and algorithms are used to design intelligent solutions - developing confidence, independence and problem-solving skills. This workshop is ideal for pupils preparing for GCSE or A Level Computer Science, or those considering further study or careers in computing, data science or AI.

Computational thinking in practice

Decomposition, abstraction and algorithmic thinking applied to complex, real-world problems.

Programming with Python

Pupils write, read and adapt Python code to process data, implement algorithms and build AI-driven solutions.

Data and algorithms

Understanding datasets, variables, selection, iteration and functions in the context of AI and machine learning.

Who it’s for

The AI Explorer workshop is designed for GCSE and A Level students and is fully adaptable for mixed abilities and SEND provision.

What’s covered

What pupils explore

Pupils are introduced to artificial intelligence through interactive discussion and practical activities that build understanding, not just excitement.

Workshop breakdown

The AI Developer workshop is structured around three core phases:

Core computer science concepts

Reinforcing key GCSE and A Level topics including algorithms, data representation, variables, iteration, selection and functions.

Hands-on Python programming

Pupils apply theory through extended coding activities, building AI-related programs using real data.

Evaluation, ethics and careers

Learners reflect on system performance, limitations and ethical implications, while exploring pathways into AI, software engineering and data science careers.

Design, build and evaluate AI solutions

Pupils take part in a guided programming challenge where they design and develop an AI-driven solution using Python and real data. Throughout the workshop, emphasis is placed on code quality, logic, testing and evaluation, mirroring assessment objectives at GCSE and A Level.

Planned, delivered and supported

AI Developer workshops are delivered in person at your school, college or event venue. We work with your existing facilities and use open-source, freely available tools, ensuring there are no additional software or licence costs. Every workshop is individually planned. Before delivery, we hold a short online planning meeting with staff to ensure the session is tailored to pupil needs and runs smoothly on the day.

Answers to common planning and delivery questions

Frequently asked questions

What age group is AI Explorer suitable for?

AI Explorer is designed for KS4-5 pupils (Years 10-13). Activities are adapted to suit different ages, confidence levels and learning needs within a class.

Some prior programming experience is recommended. The workshop starts from first principles and builds understanding through discussion, examples and hands-on activities.

We use the school’s existing facilities. Typically this includes:

  • Laptops or tablets (shared devices are fine)

  • Internet access

  • A screen or projector for whole-class discussion

All tools used are freely available online.

The workshop works best with up to 30 pupils per session. For larger year groups, multiple sessions can be delivered across the day.

Yes. Activities are designed to be inclusive and can be adapted to support SEND pupils. We discuss requirements with schools in advance to ensure appropriate adjustments are made.

AI Discovery can be delivered as:

  • A half-day workshop

  • A full-day programme with multiple sessions

The final structure is agreed with the school during the planning call.

Yes. The workshop supports computing, digital literacy and wider curriculum goals, including critical thinking, problem solving and ethical awareness.

Schools receive access to follow-up resources to support continued learning and classroom discussion after the workshop has finished.
